The Ethics of AI: Navigating Bias, Accountability, and Transparency

7

As artificial intelligence systems become more embedded in critical decision-making processes, ensuring that these systems operate ethically is becoming increasingly complex. This session will explore the ethical challenges surrounding AI technologies, focusing on the pervasive issues of bias, accountability, and transparency. We will delve into the mechanisms by which biases can be introduced into AI models—often unintentionally—and the real-world implications of these biases, from healthcare to criminal justice. Additionally, the session will address who is responsible when AI systems cause harm, exploring both legal and moral frameworks for accountability. Finally, we will discuss the need for transparency in AI, considering how algorithms should be made understandable and accessible to the public. Through engaging case studies, attendees will critically examine how AI can be designed and deployed responsibly, ensuring that these systems benefit society equitably and justly.
